MAINTAINING YOUR LAWNMOWER

For a home owner, the purchase of a lawn mower can be quite expensive which makes it important to maintain properly. If a lawn mower is maintained properly, it can last many years or even decades and will run well during that time. However, if a lawn mower is not maintained properly over time, it will cause the parts to wear out and the lawn mower will need to be replaced in a fairly short amount of time. Also, when not maintained properly, it can cause many frustrating uses.

There are certain key aspects of lawn mower maintenance that need to be borne in mind.

Care After Mowing the Lawn

It is a good idea to clean the lawn mower to prevent accumulation of dirt, which may result in clogging while bagging. Allow the engine to cool down and spray the underside of the deck with water. Removal of accumulated grass around the wheels and blades is also very important. Rotting grass produces acid and favors corrosion. If your machine uses water to cool itself, check the level of the coolant and top off if necessary. Clean the radiator fins with water. If you have a four stroke mower, check the level of the oil and top off if necessary as insufficient oil will lead to engine seizure.

Lawn Mower Maintenance For Winter

When winter arrives, it is time to put the lawn mower to rest as the lawn will be covered with snow. It is best to prepare the lawnmower for this long rest. Drain the machine of all remaining fuel. Evaporation of fuel during a long dormant fuel may cause the carburetor to clog up. Run the engine until all remaining fuel is burnt up.

Lubrication & Oil Information

The general rule is that oil in a lawn mower should be changed at least one time per year. While you are doing this, make sure to lubricate the throttle components as well as the choke to all the parts to move properly. If you see grease fittings, make sure to grease these one time each year as well.

Mower Blade Replacement

Dull mower blades damage the grass and results in uneven cuts. It is therefore important to check the blades regularly for any signs of dullness and replace them accordingly. Usually, blades are replaced at least once a year.
